I-275 Improvements

In 2016, a $75 million improvement project included pavement repair and replacement in Wayne and Oakland counties, including Novi, Farmington Hills, and Livonia. Work included:

• Replacing and repairing 88 lane miles of concrete pavement from 5 Mile Road north through and including the I-96/I-696/M-5 interchange, and at 6 Mile, 7 Mile, and 8 Mile roads.
• Repairing existing concrete shoulders, including asphalt overlay.
• Repairing pavement on I-696 in each direction from the I-96/I-696/M-5 interchange east to just east of Telegraph Road.
• Improving drainage, including re-ditching in order to promote positive drainage and alleviate ponding of storm water.
• Replacing guardrail.

Repairing 16 bridges, with proposed work varying from patching to an epoxy overlay.

• Updating intelligent transportation system (ITS) work.
• Completing landscaping, including replacing and adding trees throughout the project area.

This continuation of Reviving I-275 has been in development for several years but was postponed so MDOT could secure additional funding to perform a more complete renovation of this stretch of I-275 rather than the original "mill and resurface" asphalt replacement. With the additional funding, the State of Michigan is now investing approximately $300 million to address roads, bridges, drainage culverts, traffic signals, signs, and ITS.
